- Sri Nidanampati Sri Lakshmi Ammavaru temple is located at Adigoppula Village of Durgi Mandal in Guntur District.
Shrine’s History
As per the vertion of elder people of this area, Sri Parvathi Ammavaru was born to Sri Yaganti Ramaiah and Sugunamma with the curse of Maharshi Siladudu” and she was named as Sri Lakshmi. As she got pregnancy before her maturity her brothers killed her by litting fire. Since then some devotees begin to perform Poojas to her at the place where she was killed, with a strong faith that Sri Lakshmi incarnated as Ammavaru. Every Sunday there will be a congregation of devotees from all over Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and Performed Poojas by offering Pongallu?, Pasupu? and Kunkuma?.According to local tradition, the story of Sri Nidanamapati Sri Lakshmi Ammavaru begins in the Dwapara Yuga, with the goddess Parvati in Kailasam. An incident where Parvati Devi laughed at Nandi led to a curse by Maharshi Shiladudu. The curse foretold that Parvati would be reborn on Earth, become pregnant before marriage, and face great humiliation.
About seven hundred years ago, Parvati, as Sri Lakshmi, was born to Sri Yaganti Ramaiah and Sugunamma in the Palnadu region of Guntur district. Sri Lakshmi was born after four sons. Her father owned livestock, including a cow named Kamadhenuvu.
Sri Lakshmi would secretly go to the cowshed daily to circumambulate Kamadhenuvu and drink Gopanchita (a mixture of cow products). One day, Kamadhenuvu mated with a bull, an event unknown to Sri Lakshmi, who continued to drink the Gopanchita. Consequently, she became pregnant, even before reaching puberty.
This resulted in harsh words and condemnation from the villagers. Her brothers, believing that killing Sri Lakshmi was the only way to restore the family’s honor, tragically set her ablaze on a cotton stack while their parents were away. In the fire, the calf in her womb perished, and Kamadhenuvu also immolated herself. Sri Lakshmi was burned alive and transformed into a stone.
Since that tragic event, devotees have venerated Sri Lakshmi at the site of her sacrifice, with a strong belief in her incarnation as Ammavaru. It is said that she spoke through an 11-year-old girl, declaring that she was burned on a Sunday and wished to be worshipped with turmeric, kumkum, and Pongal offerings every Sunday.
Today, devotees from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana gather to offer Poojas, especially on Sundays, presenting Pongallu, Pasupu, and Kunkuma, continuing the tradition born from this history.
