The Sun God is the life-giver and one who nourishes. He is one of the chief deities of Hinduism and was once ranked along with Vishnu , Shiva , Shakti and Ganesha . Surya has 108 names from which Adideva, Angaraka, Arka and Ravi are the most famous ones. He is also known as Mitra, meaning friend as he is a benevolent deity who is capable of healing sick people and barren lands. He brings good fortune to people and enlightens their lives, both physically and spiritually. He illuminates the world. There are twelve solar deities in Hinduism and Surya is considered to be the joint strength of all of them. The most famous temple built for him is the Sun temple in Konark. (Odisha, India).
