Shrine’s History
History of this ancient Shiva Temple in Sri Mukhalingam village starts from the era of Eastern Ganga Dynasty. This ancient temple was believed to be constructed by Kamamava II, king of Eastern Ganga Dynasty in the 8th Century AD. This temple was built on the banks of River Vamsadhara. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and built in the Orissa style of architecture. Name of the village Mukhalingam? was called as Klinganagara in the ancient times. The village Mukhalingam was the capital of the early eastern Ganga dynasty of Orissa region.
There is a massive gateway flanked by lions was built at the entrance to the outer prakara of the Mukhalingeswara temple. We can also observe the Nandi Mandapa situated in front of the sanctum of outer prakara. Similarly, the entrance to the inner prakara also contains beautiful friezes. There are several other shrines in the inner prakara of the main temple. One of the artistic marvels of this temple is the entrance through which devotees can enter into inner prakara from south and east directions. The outer wall of the temple has the images of perforated windows sculpted beautifully. King Kamarnava of 941-976 CE was believed to be the person behind this ancient construction.
