The presiding deity is Shiva. He is called as Brahmapureeswarar. His consort is known as Malarkuzhal Minnammai. The temple inscription reveals the contributions made by the Kings of Chozha and Pandya. It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams – Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanars Tirugnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar and Sundarar.
Legends Associated with This Shrine
This is one of the prominent places of Lord Shiva where Lord Brahma was burnt into ashes. All the deities arrived on this sacred land they underwent severe austerities and worshipped Lord Shiva. They all appealed to Lord Shiva to restore Lord Brahmas life so as to reinstate the function of Trinities. Lord Shiva was pleased with the devotion of the deities and brought back Lord Brahma into life. Moreover, the most compassionate Lord provided eternal wisdom and knowledge to Lord Brahma.
