The Gokulchand Pancharatna Temple is a 17th-century shrine that happens to be a stone built pancharatna (five gems) style temple in Gokulnagar at Bishnupur subdivision of the Bankura district in the state of West Bengal, India.
Shrine’s History
Built in 1643 by King Raghunath Singha of the Malla dynasty, this shrine was one of many he had built during his reign in the kingdom of Mallabhum (the land of the Mallas).
Legends Associated with This Shrine
The walls of this shrine are richly decorated with terracotta carvings detailing moments of Lord Krishna’s life with utmost beauty.
Architectural Relevance of This Shrine
This shrine stands on a low square plinth and consists of an ambulatory pathway with a porch opened by three arches on the four sides of the temple. This style of architecture came to be known as the Pancharatna style as it resembled five gems. This style of architecture was prevalent amongst the rulers of the Malla dynasty.
