Kalikambal Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Kalikambal (Kamakshi) and Lord Kamateswarar, located in George Town, Chennai, India. The temple is located on Thambu Chetty Street, a prominent financial street running parallel to Rajaji Salai.
Shrine’s History
The temple was originally located closer to the sea shore and was relocated to the current site at 1640 AD. It was then built in 1678. Shivaji, the Maratha warrior and the founder of the Hindawi-Swarajya in the 17th century, had worshipped in this temple incognito on 3 October 1667. It is believed that a fierce form of Goddess was held in worship earlier and that this form was replaced with the shanta swaroopa (calm posture) form of Goddess Kamakshi.
Legends Associated with This Shrine
Kalikambal’s fierce Kali form used to be worshipped here but then it was replaced with the graceful Shantiswaroop form. In the temple, Devi Kalikambal is enshrined in Padmasana position with Pasha and Angusam in hands and one leg on the flower of lotus. The idol of Goddess Seriya Nayaki is also enshrined in this temple. The temple has 16 pillars with beautiful celestial images on it. Walla and Mandapa are also decorated with paintings and sculptures.

Best time to Visit -People can get a look of the Goddess from morning 6 am ? 12 pm then in the evening from 5.30 pm – 9.00 pm. You can visit this temple during any time of the year but the period between the months of October to March is the best time to visit it.
