Chennakesava Temple is the largest temple among them is located on hills lower slopes. This temples entrance area has been decorated by 5 tiered Gopuram. The walls of this pilgrimage have sculptures constructed by limestone.
Legends Associated with This Shrine
Legend has it that, Garuda the divine vahana of Maha Vishnu was once carrying a pot of nectar from the kingdom of heaven, to relieve his mother from sufferings. On his way, Indra, the king of heaven, attacked Garuda. In the course of a fight, a drop of nectar fell into the tank in the place, which in turn acquired the property of causing rejuvenation and immortality. Brahma the creator of life was discredited and thereupon, sage Narada advised Hanuman to drop a hill to cover the tank. When he did so, the hill instead of sinking floated on the water like a flower. This accounts for the significance of the place.
Architectural Relevance of This Shrine
The walls of this pilgrimage have sculptures constructed by limestone. These beautiful sculptures contains the images of the Lord Shiva in the dancing pose with 8 & 4 hands, fight of Arjuna & Lord Shiva, Arjuna taking Pasupatastra from Lord Shiva, dancers, Seshasayana, warriors rows and sight from the Mahabharata & Ramayana and also the other images of the carvings accompanying animals, pillars are adorned with the attractive designs.
