Shrine’s History
Locals consider this temple to be built by Gods’ themselves. Historical records point to East Chola kings in building this temple. Recent renovations have added many structures to the Chola construction
Legends Associated with This Shrine
This is a brahma lingam installed after brahma felt pleased for the penance of Bali Chakravarthi for Shiva at this place. Hence Shiva here is called Brahmalingeswara.
Even the Varahi river’s legend is linked to this place. Vishnu who was searching for Hiranyyaksha in varaha roopa, happen to see Bali Chakravarthy doing penance and requesting holy water for abhishekam. Vishnu pleased by Bali Chakravarthy’s penance gave raise to Varahi river by his side.
Architectural Relevance of This Shrine
All the old structures are now concealed under top layers of cement. It’s a beautiful temple having a nice view of the river below. As the river Varaha turns north here, this is also one of the Dakshin Kaasis of South India
