Yaganti Uma Maheswara Temple is a temple dedicated to Lord Siva located in Kurnool district. Sri Veerabhadra Swamy is the Kshetra Palaka of this temple. Neganti is the actual name of this place, which means ‘I Saw’, as time passes by locals started calling by Yaganti.
Shrine’s History
This temple was built during a 5th and 6th century and was patronised by Pallavas, Cholas, Chalukyas. Temple was renovated by the kings Harihara and Bukka Raya of Vijayanagara Dynasty and had glorious time during the 15th century.
Legends Associated with This Shrine
After completing North journey, Sage Agastya started his journey towards South India. During the journey, he came across a place and was impressed with the natural beauty around Yaganti and thought of installing Lord Venkateswara here. He found the Vishnu’s idol in a cave nearby and did all the rituals prior installation. At the time of installation, Sage Agastya noticed that the Idol’s toenail was broken and stopped the event. Agasthya Rishi was upset and did a penance for Lord Siva to know the reason. Lord Siva explained to him that this place suits for Saiva Kshetra and that is why he was not able to install the Idol.
Lord Siva self-manifested here as an Ardhanareswara on request of Sage Agastya. Ardhanareswara was praised here as Sri Uma Maheswara Swamy. Another version of the story is, there lived a Lord Siva’s by name Chitteppa. For whom Lord appeared in the form of a Tiger, knowing this, he started shouting as ‘Neganti ni Shiva nu Neganti ni’ which means I saw Siva I saw

Agastya raged high and cursed Kakasura, by saying that no crows should be seen anywhere near Yaganti.
