Legends Associated with This Shrine

A hunchback by the name of “Govindhudu” was once promised by a man in Kashi who had no children that if Govindhudu was to perform a ritual that would grant the man a daughter he would gladly have her get married to Govindhudu. Govindhudu, due to his severe deformity, was constantly ridiculed and made fun of in his hometown. As requested Govindhudu performed the ritual with great panache. A couple of months after the ritual was performed the man in Kashi was blessed with a beautiful daughter. The man then assured Govindhudu that he will let him know when his daughter comes of age so that he could wed her. Govindhudu, who trusts his soon to be father-in-law, leaves for his hometown telling everyone there of what had happened. Many years passed and not a single word arrived of his soon to be bride. Govindhudu furiously marched back to Kashi to meet with the man who promised so as to demand an explanation. Once in Kashi, he was mesmerised by the etherial beauty who he soon learns was the girl he was meant to wed. The girl’s father who was the man Govindhudu performed the ritual for grew bitter as he did not want his beautiful daughter to marry the oaf Govindhudu. When Govindhudu demanded for an explaination from the man, he rebutted the claims of promise put forth. Govindhudu who had no proof of the promise was utterly dejected. Govindhudu went back to his village and complained to the heads of his village. The village heads then aksed Govindhudu if he had any proof to back his claims. Govindhudu then claimed that the only witness he had of the promise were the gods Vishnu and Shiva, so he set out to convice the two gods to speak on his behalf. The gods agreed but put forth a condition. Govindhudu was to walk all the way back to his hometown and not look back. If Govindhudu was to halt and look back for whatever reason, the gods would turn to idols and would not be able to move any further. Agreeing to the conditions, Govindhudu began his journey back to his hometown. Midway through the journey, Govindhudu heard a loud thud and presumed that something happened to someone so he turned around.
