Shrine’s History

Murugan temple, Situated in the heart of the capital city, Port Blair. The temple is called Vetrimalai Murugan Temple and it is the most well-known place of worship on the island. There is another Murugan temple in this place. It is located along the Car Nicobar coastline and is called the Malaka Murugan temple. Andaman and Nicobar Islands is an example of Indias religious and cultural diversity.
The main deity here is Lord Muruga. Besides, there are shrines for other Gods and Goddesses like Ganapathi, Lord Shiva and Parvati.
The construction of the temple shows the influence of Dravidian style. The gopuram has intricate paintings. Even though the temple is very old, it is very well maintained. There are lush green gardens in the outer precinct. The architecture and design are very similar to the Kanda Kottam temple of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The main Tamil festivals that are celebrated at this temple are ? Panguni Uthram, Kanda Sashti and Thai Poosam
