Amba Devi Temple Ambadevi Amravati

Shri Ambadevi Temple is located in the centre of the city and is devoted to Goddess Ambadevi. The temple finds its mention in ancient gazetteers and is frequently visited by Hindu devotees. It is believed that Rukmini, daughter of King Bhishmak’s, a day before her marriage to Shishupal visited this temple.

Shri Amba Devi temple is so ancient that one cannot find even a single mention of it in the old gazetteers. The temple is held in great reverence by Hindus and people from different corners of not only Maharashtra but the whole of India, who come all the way to Amravati to pay respects to the Goddess.

Legends Associated with This Shrine

There is a very interesting legend associated with the Amba Devi temple of Amaravati. It goes that king Bhishma’s daughter Rukmini fell in love with Lord Krishna, after hearing the tales of his courage. However, her brother Rukmiya fixed her marriage with his friend, king Shishupal of Chedi. It is said that Rukmini was kidnapped by the Lord, just a day before her marriage at Shishupal when she came to visit the Ambadevi temple.f The Navaratri Festival falls just before Dussehra festival when the whole temple gets beautifully decorated. It is celebrated by people and the temple authorities with gaiety and harmony. During these nine days, various cultural and religious programs are arranged. Big mela is held on this occasion, which is visited by people from all walks of life with same enthusiasm. People belonging to, even the neighbouring cities flock to the festival during this time, to catch a glimpse of the Goddess.

One of the major attractions of the temple is the Navratri festival when the whole temple gets beautifully decorated. People belonging to, even the neighbouring cities flock to the festival during this time, to catch a glimpse of the Goddess. During Navratris, a huge mela is organised on the grounds of the Ambadevi temple, in which the devotees participate with full enthusiasm. The nearby hotels provide a solution to the accommodation problem faced by the pilgrims.
